I received my April Southern Living magazine about ten days ago, and fell in love with the cover...who wouldn't? I do so love strawberries.
I drooled over each recipe and decided to make the Strawberry Lemonade muffins. The photo of my kitchen is not the best, I did it from my iPhone, and in a bit of a rush to capture the picture, so it is what it is...ha ha.
This is a picture fresh from the oven, my husband has a few things to learn about framing and cutting out the mess. ha ha!
These muffins were so yummy. My husband said they reminded him of a strawberry shortcake. They were good warm just from the oven, and still again the next day warmed just a bit and with butter. The magazine also included a recipe for strawberry curd, but I didn't make it. Here in Florida we welcome fresh strawberry season in February and it's fairly easy to find them at a good price all year. These muffins are going to become a mainstay here in our house, I know I'll be making them again and again.
Check out the entire issue if you are a strawberry lover like me.
Strawberry Lemonade Muffins
Ingredients
2 1/2 cups self-rising flour
1 1/4 cups sugar, divided
1 (8-oz.) container sour cream
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 tablespoon lemon zest
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 1/2 cups diced fresh strawberries
Preparation
1. Preheat oven to 400°. Combine flour and 1 cup sugar in a large bowl; make a well in center of mixture.
2. Stir together sour cream and next 4 ingredients; add to flour mixture, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Gently fold strawberries into batter. Spoon batter into lightly greased 12-cup muffin pans, filling three-fourths full. Sprinkle remaining 1/4 cup sugar over batter.
3. Bake at 400° for 16 to 18 minutes or until golden brown and a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans on a wire rack 1 minute; remove from pans to wire rack, and cool 10 minutes.

Book Review: Bloom by Kelle Hampton
This book is a memoir, a heart tugging story of the birth of a much wanted second child. Kelle Hampton holds nothing back as she shares about the birth of her daughter Nella:
they put her in my arms.
...and I knew.
I knew the minute I saw her that she had Down syndrome and nobody else knew. I held her and cried. Cried and panned the room to meet eyes with anyone who would tell me she didn't have it. I held her and looked at her like she wasn't by baby and tried to take it in. And all I can remember of these moments is her face. I will never forget my daughter in my arms, opening her eyes over and over...she locked eyes with mine and stared...bore holes into my soul.
Love me. Love me. I'm not what you expected but oh please love me.
That was the most defining moment of my life. That was the beginning of my story.
(from page 18 of e galley)
These words, and all the words that Hampton has written hit my very soul and I was drawn into this book and couldn't put it down.
Kelle Hampton has a popular blog Enjoying the Small Things that she started with the birth of her first daughter, Lainey. Her blog was a place for her to share her creative side with writing and photography, a place for family and friends and like many of us, a place to make new friends. After the birth of Nella she decided to post her birth story, and she did it in such an open and honest way, that the outpouring of love and support via comments was overwhelming, over 700 comments in just one night.
Kelle was honest when sharing about her shock and sadness when she realized her daughter was different, she also shares how the love of her family and friends and strangers for that matter helped to learn what a gift Nella was to her and her family.
I saw the book trailer for Bloom late last week on Shelf Awareness, and I was absolutely drawn to this book. I knew I'd love it, I knew it would make me cry, and I knew I would learn something. All my predictions came true.
Knowing the premise of a memoir gives a reader some warning, you know what's going to happen, but not really how. I was silently thankful for having my own three healthy perfect children, and knowing how I too had fretted over every small detail at their births. When I had Nick at age 38 we did have extensive prenatal testing, more for other reasons as another birth defect has run in our families, but I thought about Down Syndrome and what I would feel if my child was born with that extra chromosome.
What I felt most when reading this book was not just how Kelle managed to accept that Nella was beautiful and perfect, but how much she acknowledged each step that led her to that moment. Each of us has felt disappointment, that realization that what we had hoped for just isn't going to be. So maybe things are different, that can be okay, it can lead us somewhere else. This is something I know, but felt reaffirmed when reading BLOOM.
I loved how Kelle's friends rallied around her, just as they always had. As women how would we manage without our friends, our support systems, our "net" as Kelle calls them to catch us before we fall? These relationships we have with other women, they keep us strong, they keep us grounded. My friends are there for me when I laugh or cry, or a combination of both. They are there when I want to cheer or scream...and I loved remembering this as I read BLOOM.
I need to add that the photography shared in this book is remarkable. Kelle is a self taught photographer, and clearly she has a gift in seeing the small details in life and in those she loves. Full color photography compliment the feeling of love and acceptance coursing throughout this book.
I can't say enough how much I loved Kelle Hampton's book. I gave it a 5 out of 5 stars and I'm going to do my best as a book lover and bookseller to be a cheerleader for this memoir. BLOOM goes on sale next Tuesday April 3, and you can pre-order it now from your favorite bookstore.

Sunday Morning
I just love that song by Maroon 5.....
I love nothing more than relaxing any morning, but something about a Sunday morning, coffee, a little light news, the paper, and now I'm taking the early afternoon to update the blog!!
This has been a good week. I worked 3 days, and although they were nights which I dislike, I did get time with fellow booksellers and book buyers and I drooled over more books that I don't really need. I bought one new book, SOUTHERN BISCUITS by Nathalie Dupree and Cynthia Graubart. I've read a wonderful review on Bermuda Onion's blog and the authors will be at the UCF Book Festival next Saturday March 31. I had to have it!! I downloaded several egalleys from Edelweiss this week, most with forward publish dates, but one just a week away. I was blown away when I saw the book trailer for BLOOM by Kelle Hampton on Self Awareness this past week.....it literally brought me to tears and I knew I had to try to read this book soon!!! Click on the link to see her webite and view the trailer. I'll have a review up later this week, I'm trying to finish it today or tomorrow. I then have books to complete before the book festival, as several authors I admire will be in attendance including Joshilyn Jackson and Marybeth Whalen.
In other news Adrienne's college softball team won 5 out of 6 games this past week!! Adrienne has really been hitting the ball, so very proud of her.
Caitie returned last Sunday after a week home on her Spring Break, it was very peaceful, she went to beach, amusement parks, slept in, and had a good time being away from school. Just one short month until she will be completing her first year of college....wow it flew by for both my girls.
Nick is on Spring Break this coming week, and Kevin has taken some time off too. The boys will be heading to Universal's Islands of Adventure with a friend of Nick's. I opt out because I don't really ride rides and find spending $80 to sweat and look for cool places to read ridiculous. They will have a blast....I'll have a quiet day!! Other plans include seeing The Hunger Games movie and beach days.
I'm off now to do some laundry, read and make a Target run.....such a glamorous life I lead!!

Book Review:Julia's Child by Sarah Pinneo
Julia Baily is married with two small boys, and has a vision of healthy kid's foods. She is the proud owner and creator of Julia's Child, home to all kinds of interesting organic healthy foods for kids, including the muffet. A muffet is a creation made in a muffin tin, easy to hold for small toddler hands, and Julia is able to introduce healthy veggies and fruits to children in a most unique way.
Just how will Julia put all this healthy food dream and business plan together? She lives in New York City, and along with her friend and associate Marta she's managed to put her product in a few Brooklyn stores and she's looking for a few more crunchy moms to take her business over the top, well that and a major grocery chain. Julia isn't just about the organic talk, she's for real, having bought some land in Vermont and trying to grow her own foods and have them certified organic as well. Along the way she is working crazy hours, and letting her nanny be with her sons more than she is, and draining she and her husband's savings account. She running around the city, cooking, flash freezing, storing her muffets and more in odd freezers and trying to do it all.
Julia's Child is an upbeat, fun read, one that had me laughing at Julia's predicaments and cheering for her at each big moment. Sarah Pinneo has such a way with her words in this story. I was most touched by the voice she gave Julia as a mother, the many moments when she was rushing in to spend time with Jasper and Wylie. I've been that working mom, scooping up my kids at 6pm and trying to play with them, cook dinner, do baths and story time all in the span of about 2 hours and feel like I was still a good mother. As I look back, those were hard days for certain, and Pinneo captures those feelings very succinctly.
While this book is pure women's fiction, it is well written and has a pace that is quick and easy. I enjoyed it and am giving this a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
I'm so excited to be able to offer one lucky reader a copy of Julia's Child from Plume. This is open to US resident's only. Please leave a comment and your email address and you will be entered to win. Contest open until Friday March 23, 10pm Eastern time.
Thank you to KMSPR and Plume for providing a copy of the book for me to review.
Please look for Sarah Pinneo on twitter, facebook and her website!! I see good and funny things coming from this debut author.

Friends
I am so happy to have friends, and I'll tell you what's better, when a long distance friend comes to visit.
One of my very closest friends has come to Florida to visit me!! Judy and I "met" almost 15 years ago online, both participants of an online AOL group for moms expecting babies in January 1998. We called our selves the JanMoms, and our kids the JanBabies and the rest is history. This group of 50+ women became incredibly close and our discussions were more than just about our babies and kids. There were a few "conventions" where moms met, families met, etc. Regionally some moms became great friends and others also traveled greater distances to finally meet face to face.
Living in central Florida has it's advantages and so when friends vacation in Disney World or other theme parks I have an opportunity to see them. Judy first visited in @ 8 years ago and we felt we'd known each other forever!! I've since traveled to NJ to see both of her girl's Bat Mitzvah'd, and she's been here just a couple of years ago too. While 1000 miles separate us she is perhaps my very closest friend, she knows all my secrets and fears and hopes and dreams.
Judy and I are still part of that crazy JanMom's group, now moved to facebook and over 40 members. Those babies are now 14 and driving us crazy!!!
So I'm off to play a couple days with my friend!!

Book Review: The Underside of Joy by Sere Prince Halverson
Ella Beene stumbles upon the town of Elbow California, and she finds a lovely community, nestled in the Redwood forest, and she meets Joe Capozzi. We meet Ella three years after that wonderful stumble, and she is happy beyond belief, married to Joe and step-mom to Annie and Zack. All this happiness comes crashing down on her, just like the wave that took her husband away from her in a horrible drowning accident. In one tragic moment so much of Ella's life is swept away. Joe's family gathers around her, supporting her but also looking to her to carry on the legacy of Capozzi's Market.
Shockingly Annie and Zack's mom, Paige returns to Elbow for Joe's funeral. She's been gone for three years. Ella worries what her intentions are, but she has more immediate worries.
Ella learns that the store is in financial trouble, debts owed to most of their suppliers and not enough income coming in. She's got a plan to hopefully turn things around, and then her focus must change again when she learns that Paige is filing for custody of Annie and Zack. Paige who left them just months after Zack's birth. Ella feels she is their mother, isn't that what Joe would have wanted for them? Ella doesn't know much about why Paige left, she never asked many questions. Ella sadly realizes she didn't ask Joe a lot of questions about anything, she was happy to just go along and be blissfully unaware. She does realize she has to find out so much more, about Paige, about the Capozzi family, about herself.
This is a stunning debut by Sere' Prince Halverson, a book that touches your heart as most of us can't imagine our children being taken away from us. The storyline is about a mother and step-mother but also about so much more. While reading the book I was immediately in love with Ella, she is so likable and I felt the sadness she was feeling in losing Joe, fearing losing her children and struggling to save the family business. She is real, she has simple and tangible desires, she is much like myself and many women I know.
Paige is the woman I've whispered about. How could she just leave her children? What makes a mother do such a thing? The old line about not knowing a person until you've walked a mile in their shoes is so very true in this case. Paige is a woman with a long history of suffering and neglect, and as the story goes on, Halverson brings about these traits in such a sensitive and compassionate way, I literally cried when I learned more. I may never judge a mother so quickly again.
I really enjoyed this book, I saw it's cover and picked it up at the store and added it to my growing list of books to read. I was curious about how a struggle between two women would end up. The colorful pictures that Halverson draws of the beauty of northern California, and the words she uses to create each scene each emotion are perfect. Still now I can imagine Ella's small home, the garden, the bedrooms. I can imagine the cozy store, and the delicious foods she's written about. I've given this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars. I am recommending it to everyone.
Thank you to KMSPR for the opportunity to be a part of this book tour.
Thank you to Dutton and Penguin Books for a copy of the book. This in no way influenced my opinion.
Sere Prince Halverson can also be found on facebook.
